‘Telema! Rise Up To Freedom’
Telema is the tale of refugees who have come to Asia, and the struggles they endure in a foreign land. Beginning in Africa, the play shows what it is like for the people of an ordinary village to find themselves uprooted from their homes by persecution, war and opposition. The displaced give their testimonies of difficulties and fears they face in their own homelands, and then show how it came for many of them to arrive here in Hong Kong. The Musical is Created by Roy Nyjabe, Directed by Monique Franz and Produced by Lolly Law, and performed by over 20 asylum seekers from African states such as Congo, Rwanda, Cameroon, Togo, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Telema, Lingala for ‘arise’, is a combination of drama and music, revealing how refugees have arisen from former struggles to find refuge in Hong Kong, and ultimately in the arms of Christ.
