REFUGEES WHO ARE THEY?

As of 1967, the United Nations Refugee Convention Article 1 states that ‘A refugee is defined as a person who, “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such a fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country or return there because there is a fear of persecution.” ’ Along with refugees, there are also asylum seekers, people who have left their country of origin and have applied for refugee status. They must wait as asylum seekers until the decision has been made regarding their status.
